DRUNKEN NIGHTS (London, 2012/2013 Season)

More info and submission details here tomorrow (17 Sep ’13).

DRUNKEN NIGHTS provides emerging and early career artists with support and opportunities to create new performances for pubs. Produced by Drunken Chorus, the first phase of the project, was to present six evenings of performance across London; fusing stand-up, theatre, live-art, music, dance and even karaoke – all created specifically for a pub/bar setting.

In our first year, events took place at The Trafalgar Arms in Tooting, The STAR* in Highgate and Rich Mix in Bethnal Green. 18 artists were selected from over 120 proposals. Over three nights these artists presented short performance ideas, inspired by pub quizzes, stand-up comedy, binge drinking, karaoke, confessions, and even Eastenders boozer ‘the Queen Vic’.

Three artists were selected to receive development support throughout December and January, with residencies at Rich Mix in Bethnal Green, a small budget, production support from Drunken Chorus and mentoring sessions with established artists, Franko B, Cathy Naden (Forced Entertainment) and Adam James.

The three companies selected for development, and to be part of the triple-bill were:

Non Applicables with Guide To The Perfect Night Out
Sian Myers and Fenella Ryan are both recent dance graduates. Their performance for DRUNKEN NIGHTS is a provocative and tongue-in-cheek self-help performance on how to have ‘a banger of a night’. The company have been mentored by legendary performance artists FRANKO B, and created a viral website to accompany the performance (www.guidetotheperfectnightout.com). Non Applicable are also currently resident artists with Hull Dance, and are being mentored by Gary Clarke.

Selina Thompson with Tipsy Claire The Twilight Mother
Selina Thompson is a young performer from Leeds. Last year she showed her work at the 2012 Spill National Platform in Ipswich. For DRUNKEN NIGHTS, she explores pub brawls, and her own relationship to violence and alcohol. Selina has been mentored by Adam James – a multi-disciplinary artist who has shown work internationally, and has recently been selected as an Arts Admin Bursary Artist.

Fine Chisel with Blowout!
Fine Chisel work with live music and intimate theatre. Their performance for DRUNKEN NIGHTS focuses on the creation of a good old fashioned pub knees up – with singing, dancing and party hats. Working with their mentor Cathy Naden (of Forced Entertainment) Fine Chisel have explored plenty of new ground, and their work has taken on a fairly new form to what they might normally work with – something that the company have been very excited about.
